Peregrino Shanocua Chaeta

Peregrino Shanocua (Palma Real, 1992) is an indigenous filmmaker from the Peruvian Amazon. His work focuses on the need to defend his ancestral territory and to raise awareness of the challenges that his native community faces.

His previous short films, presented at The Global Landscapes Forum (GLF) Amazonia, highlight everyday problems such as healthcare and education in remote indigenous territories of the Peruvian Amazon.

In “State of the educational infrastructure” (2021), Peregrino portrays the neglect of schools in Palma Real. His work on the impact of COVID-19 on his village (2020) tells the story of Lupe Heyaijia Dakitahuaji, the first indigenous victim of the disease in the Peruvian region of Madre de Dios. The report highlights the challenges faced by Lupe’s family after her loss.

In his latest short film, Sha’á (2023), Peregrino exposes the threat of illegal mining in his community and in the entire Madre de Dios region, a place known for its great biodiversity. The documentary is a tribute to his grandmother Sha’á, who raised him after his parents abandoned him as a baby.

Currently, our director continues to work on telling the importance of preserving the cultural and environmental legacy of Palma Real and the rest of the native populations of the Amazon.
