What’s Next in Sámi Cinema

A remarkable shift is unfolding as Sámi filmmakers now take the lead, defining their
unique narratives in new feature films and series productions. This marks a
monumental turning point for Sápmi, establishing it as a pulsating center for
Indigenous film productions in the Arctic.

Driving this change is the International Sámi Film Institute (ISFI), supported by an
extensive international network and collaborations with prominent partners such as
the Canada Media Fund, Netflix, Disney, and The Academy, to name a few.
In this third edition of Sámi Films Rising sessions, now presented at Skábmagovat
2025, the International Sami Film Institute proudly presents upcoming Sámi feature
film projects at various stages of development.

We are thrilled to introduce Elle Sofe Sara, the director, choreographer, and
screenwriter behind Árru, the first-ever joik musical. In conversation with ISFIs film
commissioner Siljá Somby, Elle Sofe will share insights into her creative process
and artistic vision, where we hopefully will get presented some visual material from
the film.

We will also get familiarized with Suvi West’s latest project, Máttaráhkká. Known for
her work in the documentary genre, Suvi is now diving into feature filmmaking. We
are excited to gain insight in the future direction of this film.

We will also highlight other upcoming Sámi film projects supported by the
International Sámi Film Institute.

So join us for an inspiring session at Skábmagovat 2025!

About ISFI

The International Sami Film Institute is building a sustainable and innovative
Sámi film industry that is globally visible and attractive. As the only Sámi film
institute, we provide Sámi filmmakers with competence and financial support in
developing, producing, and distributing Sámi films in the Sámi languages. Through
our own stories and films we fight for the survival of Sámi culture, values and
languages. By telling our stories we create our future.
